One of the best-preserved city walls in China, the Xi'an fortification was constructed in the early Ming dynasty on foundations that date to the Tang imperial capital Chang'an. The wall circuit extends 13.7 kilometres around the old city and is wide enough on top to walk or cycle. Corner towers, crenellations, and moat-side willows are illuminated after dark in a nighttime viewing program.
