Wagah is the only road border crossing between India and Pakistan, located 30 kilometres west of Amritsar, and the site of the nightly flag-lowering ceremony performed by the Border Security Force of India and the Pakistan Rangers. The elaborate high-stepping parade and flag furling ritual draws large crowds on both sides of the gate into a display of competitive national pride that is both theatrical and curiously convivial. The ceremony takes place at sunset and is free to attend from the Indian side.
