This octagonal Mughal tomb in Lahore is traditionally linked to Anarkali, a courtesan of legend associated with the court of Emperor Akbar and his son. Built in the early seventeenth century, the domed sandstone structure now sits within a government compound and houses the Punjab Archives. Its central marble cenotaph is carved with the ninety-nine names of God, and the octagonal chamber shows classic Mughal proportions. The romantic legend has kept it embedded in the city's imagination.
