Badrinath is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites and a principal Vaishnava shrine, situated at 3,133 metres in the Garhwal Himalayas on the banks of the Alaknanda River. The brightly painted Badrinath Temple, dedicated to Vishnu, is framed by the Neelkanth peak — also called the Queen of Garhwal — which rises to 6,596 metres directly behind the shrine. Hot sulphur springs at Tapt Kund beside the river are used by pilgrims for ritual bathing before entering the temple.
