Hemkund Sahib is a Sikh pilgrimage shrine located beside a glacial lake at 4,329 metres in the Chamoli district, making it one of the highest religious sites in the world accessible on foot. The steel-domed gurdwara at the lake's edge is ringed by seven snowcapped peaks, and the surrounding valley is carpeted with brahmakamal flowers in late summer. The 6-kilometre climb from Ghangaria passes through dense rhododendron and birch forest before emerging above the treeline.
