The Tara River Canyon is the deepest river gorge in Europe, cutting over 1,300 metres through the limestone plateau of the Durmitor region over a length of approximately 82 kilometres. The river runs emerald green through the canyon bottom, flanked by near-vertical walls of bare limestone that rise to forested rims above. The Đurđevića Tara Bridge, a reinforced concrete arch spanning the canyon at 150 metres above the water, was one of the largest such structures in Europe when completed in 1940.
