The Durmitor massif in northern Montenegro is a high karst plateau with glacial lakes, deep canyons, and peaks exceeding 2,500 metres, protected since 1978 as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Black Lake below the massif reflects the dark forests of Montenegrin pine and provides the standard foreground for photography of the highest peaks. The Tara River Canyon along the massif's northern edge is the deepest canyon in Europe, reaching over 1,300 metres in depth.
