Perched on the highest hill in Florence, the Romanesque basilica of San Miniato al Monte has commanded the city's southern skyline since the early eleventh century. Its marble facade of alternating white and green geometric panels faces west, catching afternoon light, while the interior contains intact medieval mosaic floors and a painted wooden ceiling. The adjacent terrace cemetery provides one of the least-crowded panoramic viewpoints over Florence.
