This open-sided arcade on the edge of the Piazza della Signoria was built in the late 14th century for public ceremonies and civic gatherings. Its three tall round arches shelter an outstanding assembly of sculpture, effectively an open-air museum free to all. Among the works are Cellini's bronze Perseus holding the head of Medusa and Giambologna's marble group of the Rape of the Sabine Women, with Roman statues along the rear wall. The raised platform offers a sheltered vantage over the square and the town hall opposite.
