Brunelleschi's dome still commands the skyline it was built for, rising over a city that effectively invented the Renaissance. Florence flowered under Medici patronage in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the concentration of genius within its old walls — the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Santa Croce, the Uffizi, the Pitti Palace, works by Botticelli and Michelangelo — remains without equal. Its historic centre was among Italy's earliest UNESCO inscriptions, joining the World Heritage List in 1982.
