This Vallombrosan church near the elegant Santa Trinita bridge pairs a plain Mannerist facade with an atmospheric Gothic interior. Its greatest treasure is the Sassetti Chapel, frescoed by Domenico Ghirlandaio with scenes from the life of Saint Francis set against recognisable Florentine backdrops and filled with portraits of the banker's contemporaries. Other chapels preserve altarpieces and tombs spanning several centuries. Because it lies slightly off the busiest routes, the church is often quiet, allowing close study of its frescoes.
