Recoleta is an elegant historic district in the north of Buenos Aires, developed as an aristocratic quarter after wealthy families fled the crowded south during a nineteenth-century epidemic. Its wide avenues are lined with French-style mansions, embassies and cafes, centred on a colonial church and a famous walled cemetery of ornate marble mausoleums. The neighbourhood holds cultural centres, museums and shaded parks. Visitors wander the tomb-lined avenues of the cemetery, where notable Argentines are interred.
