Óbuda is the oldest part of Budapest, a district on the Buda side that predates the union of three towns into a single capital. Its roots reach back to the Roman legionary settlement of Aquincum, whose excavated ruins and amphitheatre lie within the area. Around the small Baroque Fő tér square, restored 18th-century townhouses and old taverns preserve a village-like calm amid surrounding apartment blocks. The district blends Roman heritage and later provincial architecture, and visitors explore its archaeological park and museums.
