Arena Stage in Washington's Southwest Waterfront is a pioneering regional theatre, founded in 1950 and among the first in the country to use an in-the-round arena format for its productions. It played an influential role in the American regional theatre movement and in developing new plays, several of which went on to Broadway. Its modern home, wrapped in a sweeping glass and wood structure completed in 2010, encloses several performance spaces. The company focuses on American theatre, staging classics, musicals and premieres.
