The Bavarian State Opera performs in the National Theatre on Max-Joseph-Platz in central Munich, a neoclassical building with a columned portico first opened in 1818. Rebuilt after fire and again after wartime destruction, it remains one of Europe's foremost opera houses. Its auditorium is among the largest opera halls on the continent, richly decorated in tiers of gold and crimson. The company has premiered major works by Wagner and others, and its annual festival draws audiences from around the world to the heart of the city.
