The Munich Residenz was the royal palace of the Bavarian dukes, electors, and kings and remains the largest city-centre palace in Germany. Expanded over more than four centuries from a modest castle, it grew into a sprawling complex of courtyards, halls, and gardens blending Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical styles. Highlights include the barrel-vaulted Antiquarium hall lined with antique busts, the ornate treasury of Wittelsbach crown jewels, and a court theatre. Heavily damaged in the war, the interiors were later restored.
