Odeonsplatz is a broad public square in central Munich that marks the transition between the old town and the royal avenues laid out in the nineteenth century. It is framed by the Italian-inspired Theatine Church with its yellow Baroque facade and the Feldherrnhalle, a loggia modelled on a Florentine original that honours Bavarian military commanders. The square was the site of the failed 1923 Beer Hall Putsch, where Hitler's march was stopped by police gunfire, and it later became a place of Nazi ceremony. Today it hosts concerts and events.
