One of the oldest shopping districts in Jakarta, this covered market street traces its origins to the early nineteenth century, when it grew as a trading area serving the colonial city of Batavia. Its long roofed pedestrian lane packs together shops selling textiles, shoes, watches, sporting goods and tailoring, reflecting a heritage shaped by Chinese, Indian and European merchants. Landmark old storefronts and an ornamental gateway mark the entrance. Still a working street, it recalls Jakarta's mercantile past.
