Lapangan Banteng is a large public square and park in central Jakarta, close to the cathedral and independence mosque. Once a colonial parade ground, it later became the setting for a towering monument marking the liberation of western New Guinea, whose figure of a man breaking his chains dominates the space. A major redesign added lawns, fountains, a running track and an amphitheatre, turning it into a lively civic park. Weekend markets, performances and evening fountain shows now animate this historic site.
