Benchakitti Park surrounds a large lake in central Bangkok on land once occupied by a tobacco monopoly, opened in stages to honour a former queen. Its older lakeside section, with a jogging and cycling track, was greatly expanded by an adjoining forest park whose wetlands, elevated walkways and dense native plantings were designed to filter water and cool the city. Skyscrapers rise beyond the trees, giving a striking contrast of nature and skyline. The forest boardwalks are among the capital's most admired green projects.
