The Oosterpark is a public park in the eastern part of Amsterdam, the first large park the city itself laid out, opened in 1891. Designed in the English landscape style, it winds around ponds and lawns shaded by mature trees on former marshland. The park holds several monuments, including a national slavery memorial unveiled in 2002 and a memorial to the assassinated filmmaker Theo van Gogh. Its curving paths, waterfowl and diverse local community give it a lively neighbourhood character.
