Clapham Common is a large triangle of open grassland in south London, once common grazing land that became a fashionable Victorian recreation ground. Its 220 acres take in three ponds used for model boating and angling, a bandstand dating from the 1890s and wide lawns popular for cricket and informal football. The common has long drawn Londoners for weekend markets, festivals and outdoor swimming. Mature avenues of plane trees line the paths crossing the flat expanse of turf.
