A restored colonial square in Old Havana, this plaza is surrounded by richly colored townhouses with arcaded galleries and balconies from several centuries. Originally laid out in the sixteenth century as an open marketplace, it later fell into ruin before careful restoration returned its former grandeur. A modern fountain topped by a whimsical bronze figure adds a contemporary note. Cafes, a camera obscura tower and craft breweries now occupy its edges, making it a lively centerpiece of the UNESCO-listed old town.
