Torgallmenningen is the main square and promenade of Bergen, a broad open space created as a firebreak after repeated blazes and now the city's central meeting place. At one end rises the Seamen's Monument, a granite column carved with figures from the region's maritime history. Lined with shops and cafés, the square slopes gently toward the harbour and the old fish market. It hosts public celebrations and gatherings, and connects the commercial centre to the waterfront and the Bryggen wharf beyond.
