Groenplaats is a leafy square in the centre of Antwerp, laid out on the site of a former cemetery beside the Cathedral of Our Lady, whose lofty Gothic spire rises directly above it. At its centre stands a bronze statue of the painter Peter Paul Rubens, the city's most celebrated artist. Cafés and hotels line the surrounding sides, and terraces spread across the paving in fine weather. A short walk from the Grote Markt, the square serves as a relaxed gathering point beneath the shadow of the great cathedral.
