The Marundeeswarar Temple in the Thiruvanmiyur area of Chennai is an ancient Shaivite shrine dedicated to Shiva as a lord of healing and medicine. Its origins reach back over a thousand years to Chola patronage, and it is associated with sages who are said to have worshipped here for cures. A tall gopuram gateway rises above the complex, whose halls hold inscriptions recording centuries of endowments. Devotees suffering from illness come to seek relief, and its seaside setting on the southern edge of the city adds to its appeal.
