This large multi-domed mosque on Anna Salai is one of the most prominent Muslim landmarks in Chennai. Its name is said to come from the many oil lamps once needed to light its great assembly hall. Rebuilt and expanded over the years, the mosque now features gleaming domes and minarets and serves a substantial congregation, especially during Muharram observances by the local Shia community. The busy junction it anchors takes its name from the mosque, underscoring its role as a fixture of the central city.
