This white neo-Gothic cathedral near Marina Beach is built over what tradition holds to be the tomb of the apostle Thomas, one of only a few churches worldwide claiming to house an apostle's remains. Rebuilt in its present form in the late 19th century, it features soaring spires, stained-glass windows and a serene underground tomb chapel. Pilgrims from across India and abroad visit the shrine, and a small museum recounts the legend of the saint. Its slender white towers are a familiar landmark along the Chennai coastline.
