This opulent European-style palace in Tokyo serves as the state guesthouse of Japan, hosting visiting monarchs and heads of government. Completed in 1909 as a residence for the crown prince, its Neo-Baroque facade, mansard roofs and richly gilded interiors were modelled on grand palaces of Europe, an ambitious statement of the era's modernising drive. Formal French gardens and a fountain spread before the main front. Designated a national treasure, the palace opens to the public on set days.
