Known in Japanese as the Kantei, this modern low-slung complex in Nagatacho is the working office of the prime minister and the nerve centre of the executive government. The current glass-and-steel building opened in 2002, replacing an older residence that now serves as the private living quarters next door. Its design emphasises crisis-management functions, with secure conference rooms and a large press briefing hall. It sits close to the Diet and the key ministries of the capital.
