Opened in 1986 in the Akasaka district, Suntory Hall was Tokyo's first concert hall built in the vineyard style, with seating terraces wrapping around a central stage. Widely praised for its warm, detailed acoustics, it quickly became a preferred venue for leading orchestras and soloists, and conductor Herbert von Karajan famously admired it. The main hall seats around 2,000 and houses a large pipe organ. Free lunchtime organ recitals are among the ways it opens its doors to a wider public.
