This large green space in central Kingston serves as Jamaica's principal site of national commemoration. Formerly a racecourse and parade ground, it was renamed to honor the country's official National Heroes, several of whom are buried or memorialized here, including Marcus Garvey, Nanny of the Maroons, Paul Bogle and former prime ministers. Monuments and shrines are set within the park's expanse, along with a cenotaph to the war dead. State ceremonies and the annual Heroes Day observances make it the symbolic heart of the nation.
