The oldest and largest public art museum in the English-speaking Caribbean, founded in 1974 and housed in a waterfront building in downtown Kingston. Its collection traces Jamaican art from the Taíno period through colonial painting to the modern and intuitive movements, with major holdings of leading twentieth-century artists. Sculptures, including a prominent monument, stand in and around the building. Rotating exhibitions and a biennial survey give the gallery a central role in the nation's visual culture.
