Standing just north of Arlington National Cemetery, this bronze memorial recreates the celebrated 1945 photograph of Marines raising the American flag on Iwo Jima. Sculptor Felix de Weldon modeled the six towering figures from Joe Rosenthal's image, straining to plant the staff atop a rough granite base. An actual cloth flag flies from the pole at all hours by presidential proclamation. Inscriptions honor Marines who have died since 1775, and the site offers a sweeping view across the Potomac toward the capital.
