This park in the northern outskirts of Delhi marks the site of the great imperial assemblies, or durbars, held to proclaim British monarchs as emperors of India. The vast field hosted the 1911 gathering where the transfer of the capital to Delhi was announced. After independence, statues of colonial figures removed from the city were relocated here, including a towering George V, giving the grounds an air of a graveyard of empire. An obelisk commemorates the durbars, and the little-visited setting draws those interested in the colonial past.
