An art academy and museum on the Calle de Alcalá with a distinguished collection often overlooked beside the larger Madrid galleries. Founded in the eighteenth century, it holds paintings by Goya, who was a member, along with works by Zurbarán, Rubens and Arcimboldo. Its picture galleries present Spanish and European masters in quiet, uncrowded rooms. A cabinet devoted to Goya includes several of his self-portraits and small panels. The institution also preserves a print collection and continues as a functioning academy of fine arts.
