Standing in the middle of Plaza de Cañovas del Castillo along the Paseo del Prado, this eighteenth-century fountain portrays the sea god Neptune holding a trident atop a chariot shaped like a shell and pulled by horses with fish tails. It was commissioned as part of Charles III's ambitious plan to beautify the boulevard connecting the city's cultural institutions. The sculpture faces its counterpart, the Cibeles Fountain, a short walk away. Football fans of Atlético Madrid traditionally converge here to mark their club's triumphs.
