Thurston Gardens is Suva's botanical garden, established in the late nineteenth century and named after colonial governor Sir John Bates Thurston, a keen botanist. Mature tropical trees, palms, orchids and lily ponds fill the grounds, which sit beside the Fiji Museum and Albert Park in the city's colonial heart. A clock tower memorial and shaded walkways make it a peaceful retreat from the busy centre. The gardens preserve an important collection of Pacific plant species a short walk from Suva's main civic landmarks.
