Albert Park is a large open green in central Suva, framed by the Government Buildings, the Grand Pacific Hotel and Thurston Gardens. Long used for cricket, rugby and public gatherings, it earned lasting fame in 1928 when aviator Charles Kingsford Smith landed his aircraft there during the first trans-Pacific flight. Today the park hosts sport, festivals and national celebrations, its flat lawns ringed by colonial buildings and palm trees. Central and accessible, it is one of the capital's principal civic spaces.
