The imposing Government Buildings dominate central Suva beside Albert Park, built in the 1930s in a solid colonial style around a prominent clock tower. For decades they housed the main organs of the Fijian state, including courts and government offices, and remain a working seat of administration. Reinforced concrete construction was chosen to withstand cyclones and earthquakes, giving the complex a stately, institutional presence. The surrounding lawns make the buildings one of the capital's most recognisable colonial landmarks.
