This restored wooden villa in the Thorndon district was the birthplace and childhood home of Katherine Mansfield, one of New Zealand's most celebrated short-story writers. Furnished to reflect the 1880s and 1890s, it displays period rooms, family photographs and manuscripts that illuminate the writer's early life and the settings that later appeared in her fiction. A small garden of the era surrounds the house. It operates as a literary house museum and is the only building associated with Mansfield that is open to the public.
