Overlooking a bend of the Brisbane River in the suburb of Newstead, this is the oldest surviving residence in the city, built in 1846 for a pastoralist and later home to the government resident. Its wide verandahs, French doors and elevated position reflect early colonial adaptation to the subtropical climate. Furnished with period pieces and set in riverside parkland, the house operates as a museum interpreting nineteenth-century domestic life in Brisbane.
