Built on the foundations of the first Government House, this museum sits at the corner of Bridge and Phillip streets in the heart of the old colonial town. Opened in 1995, it explores the history of Sydney from its Aboriginal origins through the arrival of the First Fleet and the growth of the modern city. The forecourt features a striking sculptural installation of poles honouring the Eora people, and archaeological remains of the original governor's house are marked in the pavement.
