This large open parkland adjoins the Royal Botanic Garden on the eastern edge of central Sydney and dates back to land set aside by early governors for public use. Its broad lawns have long hosted political rallies, open-air concerts and festivals, and remain a favourite spot for lunchtime crowds from the nearby city offices. The park slopes down toward Woolloomooloo and Farm Cove, taking in views of the harbour, and shelters the sandstone Art Gallery of New South Wales along its edge.
