This memorial on the Square of the Three Powers honours Brazilian national heroes, taking the form of a soaring white concrete structure shaped like a bird or a dove in flight. Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1986, it holds a book of national heroes and a large stained-glass panel by Marianne Peretti flooding the interior with coloured light. Murals recall the independence martyr Tiradentes and other figures. Standing beside the great civic square, it forms part of the ceremonial heart of the modernist capital.
