The seat of Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this modernist palace was designed by Oscar Niemeyer and completed in 1970 on the Esplanade of Ministries. Its most recognized feature is a block wrapped in a colonnade of slender concrete arches that seem to float above a reflecting pool dotted with tropical plants. Inside, a sweeping open staircase without visible supports rises through a hall of Brazilian modern art and antique furniture. Guided tours pass ceremonial reception rooms and a rooftop garden landscaped by Roberto Burle Marx.
