This ornate belvedere stands high in the Tijuca Forest, its pagoda-style roof recalling Chinese immigrants who cultivated tea nearby in the nineteenth century. Reached by a winding forest road popular with cyclists, the pavilion frames a sweeping view over the lagoon, Corcovado, Sugarloaf and the southern beaches far below. The carved-concrete structure, painted in warm tones, sits within protected rainforest alive with birds and monkeys. It is a favourite stop for photographers seeking a panorama of Rio's mountain-and-sea landscape.
