The Municipal Theatre of Caracas is a nineteenth-century performance hall built during a period of civic modernisation in the capital. Its horseshoe auditorium, tiered boxes and painted ceiling follow the model of European opera houses of the time. For generations it hosted opera, zarzuela, concerts and civic ceremonies, becoming a centre of the city's cultural life. The elegant façade and interior decoration reflect the ambitions of Caracas society in the late 1800s, and the theatre remains a landmark of the old central district.
