The Cathedral of Caracas stands on the eastern side of Plaza Bolívar in the colonial core of the city. Built from the seventeenth century after earlier structures were damaged by earthquakes, it combines a simple façade with a richly decorated interior of chapels and paintings. The Bolívar family chapel holds the remains of the Liberator's parents and wife. As the seat of the Archbishop of Caracas and a witness to key moments in the city's history, it remains a focal point of the old town.
