The National Pantheon of Venezuela occupies a former church at the northern edge of the historic centre of Caracas and serves as the resting place of the nation's most honoured figures. Simón Bolívar's remains were moved here in 1876, and the interior is decorated with murals depicting scenes from his life. A modern annexe, the Mausoleum of the Liberator, was added in later years to house his tomb. Ceremonial guards and state occasions underline the building's central role in Venezuelan national memory.
